Tanaka Makiko

Date of Birth 14 January 1944

Makiko Tanaka is a Diet member in the House of Representatives. Her father Kakuei Tanaka, was the prime minister. When she was a high school student, she went to America to study for two years. In 1964 she entered Waseda University where she was active in a theatrical company.

In 1968 she married Naoki whose father was a member of the Diet. At the same time, she followed her father' s profession and demonstrated her ability to her father. But in 1976 her father arrested because of he had accepted a bribe.When in 1983, her husband, Naoki, was campaigning for the diet,she also electioneered and helped him win the election for him. In 1985 her father collapsed owing to a cerebral infarction and was hospitalized. She helped nurse and him, after one year he recovered mind of his functions.

In 1991 she became the president of a transportation company and she joined the Social Democratic Party of Japan (SDPJ). And she was placed in change of matter concerning transportation. Gradually her position as a women grew large in the public and she attracted national attention. At the same time in 1992 she caused a sensation and was called "the whirlwind of madonna", because she made clear and severe proposal in the Diet. Now she is one of the few active women Diet members.
