Footnote is a kind of note that you can see at the end of pages. You might have noticed when you read books. When writing graduate thesis, it'll be necessary to use Footnote. Then it is useful to use this Footnote function.
You need to chose "Footnote" or "Endnote". But now let me explain you Footnote. There is not much difference between them, so you can use End note in the same way.
How to insert Footnote
When you finish writing document, put the cursor where you want to put Footnote. When it is done, choose from Insert menu, Footnote/Endnote.
Then the screen changes and you are ready to insert Footnote. Start inserting it. When you finished, you have to be back to the previous screen. You need a skill to be back. Pay attention to the under-left side. You can see the edge of the previous screen. If you click the 3rd button from the left to be back. When you need to change your Footnote, bring cursor where you want to change and click. Then you'll have the screen to again to change Footnote.
