Common Nicknames in English

This chart shows the nicknames for common given names. You need to be careful, however. Do not call someone by their nickname, unless that is what they tell you to do! Also, the 'nickname' below is sometimes the person's real name. If you call a person "Jack," that does not always mean that his real name is "John"; his parents might have given him the name "Jack" when he was born!

Also, names ending in "y" or "ie" are often used by children, but they use the shorter, more "adult" version of the nickname when they grow up.

Once you have studied these, try the The Nickname Game! (When there are several nicknames, only the first one is used in the same.)
