At 23 years of age, Japanese screen actor Kaneshiro Takeshi is a natural at what he does. Born in Taiwan, Kaneshiro graduated from the American School in Taipei and speaks fluent English, Cantonese, Mandarin Chinese, Taiwanese and Japanese. He enjoys a strong following throughout much of Asia, especially in Hong Kong, and his stardom is clearly rising.

Kaneshiro's career began with a television commercial while he was still a student in Taipei. His record debut came in 1992 and he got his first movie role in Taiwan the following year. He then appeared in a number of Hong Kong films directed by Wang Jia Wei, one of which, Chungking Express opened in 1994 . "If you get a role in a Hong Kong movie," says Kaneshiro, "your face is seen all over Asia. Hong Kong makes a lot of movies and I was lucky enough to be chosen for one." It is not necessary for him to given the movie industly's borderless appeal. it is a world he has adapted to very well.

"My father is Japanese, and my mother is from Taiwan," he says. "When I was a kid, my dad kept telling me, don't forget that you're Japanese. But I don't think of myself as belonging to any particular country. I'd go anywhere I was offered an interesting job." Kaneshiro says that some of the best places to live are Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, but notes that "for a fun time, Tokyo is great."
